About Counselling

What is counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy, which allows you to openly express yourself, and share your innermost thoughts and feelings, in a safe, yet supportive space. It is an opportunity to be listened to in a confidential setting, which allows you to start to unpack and understand what is troubling you in a constructive manner.

It may be that you are experiencing difficult problems in life and the feelings and emotions they cause may be challenging to understand or share with anyone else. Very often internalising your issues, may lead you to feel trapped, helpless and overwhelmed and this can be lonely and isolating.

The truth is that from time to time many of us may experience difficult situations in our daily lives. In these circumstances it may be helpful to consider counselling as a means of developing a clearer perspective that will encourage a greater sense of of wellbeing and confidence. A willingness to pay attention to our bodily sensations, feelings, emotions and thought processes with curiousity, may encourage an attitude and approach that will move you further towards your true potential.

What Benefits can be Expected?

Space and time to speak to someone who is available to listen without any judgement or ulterior motive, other than to help you to identify your own inner resources. You will not be given advice or direction. This is your journey and I believe you already have the answers, its just that they may not be immediately evident. Therefore developing a collaborative, therapeutic relationship may provide a helpful resource that will allow you to identify your full potential.

Are there any special requirements?

Understanding that counselling is a regular committment. It's a little bit like going to the gym. You will have a better chance of achieving your aims if you attend on a regular basis. You are allowing yourself a regular time to understand and learn about your strengths and resources. The time in between each session gives you the opportunity to process this information. I normally see clients on a weekly basis for a 50 minute session. Some people come for as little as a few weeks, whereas others may choose to come for a much longer period, it really depends on your personal reasons and goals.
